January 26, 1968 - May 19, 2022
Matthew Glynn O’Neill, 54, passed from this beautiful world to the next on May 19, 2022. He leaves behind many family members and friends who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. Matt was born on January 26, 1968, in Bellingham, WA into a family of five girls; Kelly, Tracy, Julie, Wendy and Shannon, which was quite the cause for celebration – finally a boy. Mom and Dad and all of us were so excited. Matt was soon joined by Michael - two boys, two brothers to love – and the family circus was complete. Matthew spent his younger years in the Maple Falls area where he fished at Silver Lake, played in the woods, built forts with his brother, and kept his sisters entertained. In 1977, the family moved to the Bellingham area which resulted in Matt, Mike and Shannon attending Assumption Catholic School and the Three Amigos were born and more adventures ensued. After graduating from Meridian High School, Matt commercial fished in Alaska and worked at Intalco. His marriage to Carrie in 2005 resulted in an instant family as he became a father to Carrie’s two boys, Scott, and Ryan. And then came the loves of his life: Piper and Patrick whom he adored and cherished beyond measure. Matt was so proud of his children and their accomplishments and being with them brought him the greatest joy and happiness. He was also a step-grandpa to Bridget & Kate Brierly, Alexander Brierly, and Isaac & Thomas Matheson. Papa Matty loved them all very much. Matt enjoyed life, had an infectious laugh, was so easy to be around and never met a stranger. He loved baseball and going to games with his kids. He was an avid collector of “junk” (he was going to be rich one day!) old-time radio, camping, board games, was a sucker for feel-good movies (he was not ashamed to get choked up when watching them) politics and talk radio. He also loved his dog, Cooper very much... and Cooper loved him. Matthew is survived by his father, Glynn; his beautiful children, Piper, and Patrick; Scott (Kat) and Ryan (Lauren) Brierly, and their mother, Carrie. His sisters and brother, Kelly (Ben); Tracy (Bill) Johnson; Julie; Wendy (Frank) Galloway; Shannon (Brent); Michael (Maria); many nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, cousins and friends. His Mom, Marcy, was taken far too early when Matt was just 18. Like his children, he loved her with all his heart. A celebration of Matthew’s life will be held later this summer.
